Customized altitude training improves physical performance and is a fundamental part of modern training concepts. The Val Senales Glacier with its training centre is one of the most important destinations for fitness holiday and high altitude training in Italy, in particular for Alpine and cross-country skiing.
From mid-September onwards (third weekend in September), the Val Senales Glacier offers ideal conditions for pre-season training. On the Grawand slope, athletes have access to perfect training conditions with different levels of difficulty. The slalom and giant slalom training runs at the Leo Gurschler slope offer additional terrain variations. The slope, which opened in October 2015, is 550 metres long and can be artificially snowed. This creates an ideal, grippy surface for professionals. With a vertical drop of 200 metres and a slope of almost 60 percent, it is for experts only! The new slope is named after local pioneer and visionary Leo Gurschler, who established South Tyrol’s first glacier ski area in Val Senales 50 years ago. World Cup Teams from both Austria and Italy have trained at the Val Senales Glacier before.
An increasing number of athletes from other sports, such as swimmers, cross-country skiers, trail runners and canoeists, have also discovered the high altitude training effects for themselves. It has become an essential part of the long and intense pre-season training program in preparation for international competition.
National teams from all over the world take advantage of the high altitude cross-country ski trails for cross-country skitraining – including world class athletes. The challenging and perfectly snowed glacier trail, Hochjoch, is about ten kilometres long and runs over wide open terrain.
Starting as early as mid-October, this trail at 3000 metres above sea level offers perfect conditions for high altitude cross-country ski training.
For international canoeists, high altitude training has become an integral component of their training program. With an elevation ranging between 1500 to 3200 metres above sea level, the beautifully landscaped Val Senales Valley offers an ideal training area for canoeists.
The emerald green lake at the Vernago dam (1700 metres above sea level), is about 100 acres in size and offers well-marked circular courses of different lengths. The three-time Olympic champion and multiple world champion, Antonio Rossi, as well as the Austrian women’s national canoe team, have been to Val Senales Valley to reap the high altitude training benefits for canoe and kayak training.
he altitude of 2000 metres above sea level and the Olympic-sized indoor pool make the town of Maso Corto a well-respected high altitude training destination for athletes and swimmers. Like all endurance sport athletes, swimmers also benefit from the performance improving effects of high altitude training.
International swimming teams from France, Croatia and Germany come to Maso Corto for intense pre-season training in a calm atmosphere.
