Hiking tips on the glacier
The descent to the glacier lake starts from the mountain station of the Glacier Cable Car and leads down to the "Ötzi bivouac". From ther it will only take you 35 minutes to reach this amazing depression which gathers meltwater from the Alto Giogo. From here, it flows via the Senales brook and the Adige until it ends in the Adriatic Sea. The meltwater which flows into Austria will eventually reach the Black Sea. A path winds its way from the glacier lake to the ‘Schöne Aussicht’ refuge (20 minutes). From there, an archaeologically themed hiking trail (A3) coming from Vent in North Tyrol leads down to Kurzras on the “Transhumanz “* path.« Back
(*transhumance is a form of pastoralism or nomadism organized around the migration of livestock between mountain pastures in warm seasons and lower altitudes the rest of the year: since a good 600 years, more than 1,000 sheep have been crossing the glacier to the pastureland in northern Tyrol, and return back ‘home’ in September. The UNESCO has listed the sheep’s migration as an Intangible Cultural Heritage).
