Shopping in Meran
A mere
thirty minutes drive will take you from the idyllic peace-and-quite of this high Alpine valley to the lively little spa town of
Meran. The chance for a real shopping spree as you wander from one tempting place to the next with everything from
traditional stores selling Tyrolean fashion and accessories to the most
elegant boutiques imaginable.
The
Laubengasse, the picturesque, covered arcades in the old town centre which date back to the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, is the real c
ommercial heart of Meran and is well-worth a visit. Guests admire the various architectural styles, from the Middle Ages to the present-day, and love the decorated facades, painted frescos and three-sided Erker bay windows which are so typical of townhouses in
South Tyrol.
The Freiheitsstraße, Rennweg and other nearby streets, alleyways and passages also offer a
fine selection of tempting shops and help give Meran a feeling of style and a certain flair.
Shopping in Bozen
The
city of Bozen, the provincial capital, has much to offer visitors who decide to spend a day there to see the
Archaeological Museum where Ötzi, the
Man from the Ice is housed.
The old centre is known for its shady arcades and chic shops and boutiques. It is the
perfect place for a shopping trip and you are sure to enjoy wandering from one attractive window display to another with their designer fashion and colourful, traditional Tyrolean costumes and dresses. Such a great choice!
The mixture of the two very
different local cultures and languages, German and Italian, helps makes the city especially attractive to visitors so, why not be tempted and let yourself enjoy the elegance of top Italian fashion combined with the practical comfort of German style.
The bakers, coffee houses, bars and restaurants in the narrow streets of the
old town serve delicious local specialities so stop for a little rest and try a glass of delicious "vino rosso" or a "bianco" under the shade of a grapevine-covered terrace and just watch the world go by!
And, whatever you do, don't forget to have a look at the colourful, artistically-arranged stalls of the
open-air fruit-and-vegetable market at the end of the arcades. The market has something for everybody from crisp fruit and fresh vegetables to delicious cheeses of all kinds, local produce as well as somewhat more exotic items. Paradise for enthusiastic cooks and gourmets!
