Migration of the sheep - South Tyrol

Our sheep

Transhumanz Val Senales South Tyrol - Ötz Valley
Since thousands of years, sheep have been walking though the Alps crossing every year, in mid-June, to go from Schnals and the Sonnenberg mountain in Schlanders to the summer pastures behind the Ötz Valley (Austria).
Those who participated in this ancient show will never forget it. The happy return of over 4,000 sheep is welcomed with celebrations.

Transhumance - a very old tradition in Senales

Book Recommendation: Transhumanz

Transhumanz, is a photographic book by Mauro Gambicorti, Maira Pelizzoni and Silvano Pergher which documents the annual migration of sheep on the mountains of Alto Adige (Italy). The book reports the century old tradition, which takes the flocks from the Val Venosta up to Val Senales and the pastures of Otzal in Austria. Through stunning images, Gambicorti documents the long route across mountains and the hardships and sacrifices of the shepards. Available in Italian, English and Spanish.
